Ordering Articles within an Ovid Search Made Easier

We have made ordering articles from our Ovid MEDLINE and PsycINFO databases easier. If our holdings note indicates that we do not own the journal, click on the new blue “Order It @ Sladen” button, log into your ILLiad account, and the order form will automatically be filled in with the citation information. Just click on “Submit” and the article will be ordered and delivered to your account. This new button saves time and eliminates a few mouse clicks.

Ordering articles within a PubMed search is easy too. Click on the red “Find It @ Sladen” button located in the top right corner of the screen to check whether we own the journal. If we do not own it, click on the GO button for ILLiad, login in, and the order form will auto-populate.

If we own the journal, but only in print, you can still order it via ILLiad and it will be scanned and sent to your account. All articles are sent as PDF files and will remain in your account for 30 days. If it is an article you want to keep, it must be saved to disk or drive.

All articles are $3.00 each and may be pre-paid in cash, or charged to your department’s cost center number.

If you need to set-up your ILLiad account, please go to, ILLiad (or tinyurl.com/sladendoc) as a “First Time User.”

Contact the Sladen Document Services Department at 313-916-8752, or email docsvs@hfhs.org, if you have any questions or concerns regarding ordering articles within a database.

Note About UpToDate Access

UpToDate is one of the most popular online resources Sladen Library offers to the HFHS staff. We get many requests for access to it from home. However, due to licensing restrictions and costs, we are only able to offer UpToDate access to HFHS users at HFHS facilities. Recent changes have been implemented to insure that we are not in violation of our agreement with UpToDate. If you have trouble accessing UpToDate from an HFHS facility, then please make sure you are pointing your Internet browser to the following address:

http://desoto.hfhs.org:2048/login?url=http://www.uptodate.com/online

Should you continue to have trouble, please contact John DuLong at 313 916-2550 or jdulong1@hfhs.org.

Spotlight on the Sladen Library Web Site: Evidence-Based Practice Toolkit

Since the Sladen Library web site is so large (close to 250 web pages), you may not be familiar with all its web pages. Therefore, periodically we will spotlight a specific web page to better familiarize you with the resources we have to offer.

The Sladen Evidence Based Practice Toolkit is located at http://www.henryfordconnect.com/sladen.cfm?id=253. The library staff has collected together virtually all of our evidence-based resources in one web page. If you frequently use these resources, it would be a good idea for you to bookmark this page for future reference.

One of the key evidence based resources is the ‘5S’ Pyramid of Evidence Resources, which takes all of the Sladen resources and organizes them into the six components of a pyramid:

Systems – Computerized Decision Support

Summaries – Critically-Appraised Topics and Evidence-Based Guidelines, which include UpToDate, First CONSULT, and the National Guideline Clearinghouse.

Synopses – Critically-Appraised Journal Articles, such as ACP Journal Club and the Evidence Updates

Syntheses – Systematic Reviews, such as the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and the Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effects (DARE)

Studies – RCTs, Cohort Studies, Case-Control Studies, and Case Reports, utilizing resources such as PubMed, Ovid/Medline and CINAHL

Expert Opinion – Review Articles and Textbooks, including eMedicine and Harrison’s Online

There are instructions on how to use the twelve evidence-based medicine search filters in Ovid/Medline or PubMed, along with fifteen clinical queries in the CINAHL database for evidence-based nursing information.

The Sladen Library has eight evidence-based practice databases, including: ACP Journal Club, ACP PIER and the five Cochrane Databases. We have access to more than 200 books on evidence-based practice in the Sladen Library Catalog, and six of the key titles in the field are detailed on this web page.

We have 16 evidence-based practice journals including: Evidence-Based Medicine, Evidence-Based Nursing, and several other subject-based evidence journals. There are several evidence-based article series included on this web page: the JAMA Rational Clinical Examination Article Series, the Lancet EBM series, BMJ How To Read A Paper, JAMA User’s Guides to the Medical Literature, and Canadian Journal of Surgery Users’ Guide to the Surgical Literature.

We have also included more than 50 Internet Resource links on evidence-based practice, including: Bandolier, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, ACP Guidelines, clinical practice guidelines from various organizations, Cochrane, McMaster, SumSearch, and PICOmaker.

The Sladen Evidence Based Practice Toolkit is an ideal web page to help you locate an evidence-based resource. All of these resources are also available from home or any other remote location. Please visit the Remote Access web page for further information.

Searching PubMed on Handhelds

If you frequently search PubMed while on the go from your handheld, you may notice that using your handheld’s web browser can be a bit cumbersome. Did you know that there is a scaled down interface
available for free from the NLM particularly for use on handhelds? It can be accessed here: http://pubmedhh.nlm.nih.gov/.

iPhone and iPod Touch users may also be interested in purchasing the PubMed On Tap app from the iTunes store. This app costs $2.99, but it provides a very user-friendly search interface that even allows for using Boolean operators and recalling recent search activity. You can try out this app for free by downloading the lite version from the iTunes store; however the lite version only displays the first 5 results of your search.

E-Books Available in the Sladen Library Catalog

Have you taken a look at the Sladen Library online catalog lately? As more relevant full text online books become available we are adding them to our online catalog. The easiest way to search for electronic books is by using the Power Search feature as shown in the example below.

Using the drop down box for Type, you can limit your search to books that are available as electronic full text online by selecting the “Electronic” limiter. Then, use the appropriate search boxes to search by author, title or keyword using the words or phrase drop down box.

Another way to access our e-books is found on the webpage shown below.

Navigate to this page by clicking on Books under the Resources heading (found on the left hand side of the page) and then clicking on the link for Sladen Electronic Books. Enter your keywords in the Google-like search box. This search box is set to limit your results to electronic books. To access the full text click on the chain link that looks like a link of a chain . An example to search for is “pretest.” This will bring up a number of titles frequently used for review on various topics. Since you are searching with keywords, searching again using “self assessment” or “review” will bring up additional similar texts. Occasionally there will be more than one icon for the full text and clicking one of the icons will only display an electronic table of contents.

If you scroll further down on this webpage you will see a list of our most frequently used online books. Clicking on the title will take you directly to the online version.

Not finding what you are looking for? You can submit a book request by filling out this form. http://www.henryfordconnect.com/sladen.cfm?id=754. Navigate to the form page by clicking on the Forms & Feedback link found under the Services heading located on the left margin of every Sladen webpage. We will try to add your request to our collection. Please note that not all books are available electronically.

From the Conrad R. Lam Archives

In 1977, the filming of The Betsy was a highlight on the Henry Ford Hospital campus. Along with actors, Sir Laurence Olivier and Tommy Lee Jones, hospital nurses also participated in the movie. The Clara Ford Nurses Home lounge was transformed into a patient room and the thirteen hour day ended in a four minute segment. The movie took two weeks to film in Detroit, with other locations at Cranbrook, Parke-Davis and the Detroit Metropolitan Airport.

The production of movies was however nothing new to the Henry Ford Hospital staff. John Kroll and Joe Madej worked on countless international medical films, which began in the 1950's with Drs. Guyton, Lam, Szilagyi, Ponka, Redfern and Schucknecht. Dr. Joseph Beninson and Joe Madej worked on the film, Pressure Gradient Prophylaxis of Thrombosis, which won the motion picture Golden Eagle Award, the medical equivalent to the Academy Award in 1979. The Conrad R. Lam Archives has also assisted in historical research for film companies, including the 2008 Universal Films production Public Enemies starring Johnny Depp.

Creating an Endnote File in PubMed

You may have noticed that PubMed looks a little different lately.  Just recently PubMed was redesigned with the goal of providing better functionality and an updated look.  As a result, a few buttons and functions have been moved to different places on the page.  Searchers who use PubMed to import citations into Endnote should note that the method of creating an Endnote compatible file has slightly changed.  Here are the new steps:

   1.  Select the citations you want to export.

   2.  Click Send To in the top right corner of the citation window.

   3.  In the Send To box, choose File.

   4.  Once File is selected, additional file formatting options will appear.  From the Format drop-down list, choose Medline, then click Create File.

   5. You be asked to save the file to a desired location.  The saved file can then be imported into Endnote.

If you have additional questions about this procedure, or any other general inquiries about using the new PubMed, please call 313-916-2550 or email the Sladen Library.
